"You know, you'd think since these were Residential Schools, you'd think they might actually try to educate us. And I mean, they did. We were taught the basics of reading, and writing, and numbers, and all that. But we weren't taught any higher level stuff. Everyone just kinda knew that none of us would amount to much. We weren't white, so you know, it wasn't in our blood, they told us. None of us would go on to do more than labour jobs anyway, so what's the point? They figured we wouldn't even be able to handle the higher level stuff. So we were never taught it. We were taught household skills, like sewing, or woodwork, or mending. That was more fitting for our station, they figured, so that's what it was. Once the whole ordeal was over, that's when I really started to realize how tough that made it. Can't get a good career without a good education. So in a way they were right. Few of us ever did manage to get past labour jobs. But whether that was because we weren't made for it or because we weren't taught... Well. That's for everyone to decide for themselves, isn't it?"
